Gloss, Matte, Sparkle, Chrome or Oil Slick: Which Vinyl Finish Should You Pick?

We get asked about finishes almost as often as we get asked about sizing. With 50+ colours and five distinct finish types, it's easy to end up picking on looks alone and finding out later it wasn't the right call for where the decal's actually going. Here's what each finish is actually like to live with.

Gloss: The Standard for a Reason

Gloss is our most popular finish and the one most people default to, mainly because it just works everywhere — windows, paintwork, laptops, helmets. It gives you the sharpest colour saturation of any finish, holds detail well on intricate designs like track outlines with fine lettering, and is the easiest to keep clean since there's no texture for dirt to sit in. If you're not sure what to pick, gloss in your team or car's colour is rarely the wrong call.

Matte: Understated but High-Maintenance

Matte has a flat, non-reflective finish that a lot of people love for a subtler, more "factory" look — it reads less like a sticker and more like part of the car, especially on darker paintwork. The trade-off is that matte shows fingerprints and water spots more readily than gloss, and on curved or textured surfaces it can be slightly less forgiving to apply cleanly. Great for bonnets, roof strips and larger panel decals where the low-key look matters more than easy cleaning.

Sparkle: Detail-Dependent

Sparkle vinyl has a genuine glitter texture embedded in the material, which looks fantastic under sunlight or at a car meet in the evening, but it's worth knowing the texture does add slight thickness. For very fine, intricate designs — tiny lettering, complex track outlines with lots of small detail — we sometimes recommend simplifying the design slightly so the sparkle finish doesn't fight with fine detail. For bolder shapes, logos, and caliper stickers, sparkle is one of our most requested finishes and looks properly premium in person.

Chrome: Reflective and Best for Bold Shapes

Chrome vinyl gives a genuine mirror-like metallic finish, which makes it brilliant for caliper stickers and bold logo decals where you want something that catches the eye from a distance. It's less suited to intricate line work like circuit outlines — fine detail can get a bit lost in the reflectiveness — so we'd steer you toward chrome for simpler shapes and gloss or a solid colour for detailed track maps.

Oil Slick: The JDM Favourite

Oil slick is the iridescent, colour-shifting finish that's become a genuine JDM culture staple — it looks different depending on the angle and the light, cycling through purples, greens, and blues off a dark base. It's a statement finish rather than a background one, which is why it works so well on caliper stickers, badges, and smaller accent decals rather than huge panel-covering pieces. If you're going for a stance or drift-inspired look, oil slick is usually the finish that ties it together.

Matching Finish to Application

As a rough rule: gloss for anything with fine detail or anywhere you need easy cleaning (windows, laptops), matte for larger panels where you want a low-key look, sparkle and chrome for bold shapes and calipers, and oil slick for accent pieces where you want maximum visual impact in a small area.
